Storage Services: How Much Space Do You Need?

How important are storage services to the average home or business owner? Is it really necessary to leave some things behind while relocating? Every situation is different but it is important to figure out what will be making the transition and what items will need to be left behind. It is not easy to decide how much space is necessary but working with a professional can help make the planning process a little more efficient.

Through the Eyes of A Professional:

It is not always easy to estimate how much stuff you have and how much space it is going to take up. If you are trying to save some money, you may want to imagine that you have less stuff that will fit into a smaller space in order to save some cash. Unfortunately, it could cost you more in both time and money if you need to move your items from one space to another.

Instead, let a professional come in and take a look. Explain what items will need storage services and if there are any specifications that need to be followed. For example, some items may need to stay in a climate-controlled unit. Paperwork may need to be organized a certain way to ensure that it is accessible at all times. These things will be addressed when the professional sets up a consultation.

Always Consider Something A Little Larger:

It is easy to imagine that your items will not take up much space. Remember that when you go through the transition of moving, it is not unusual to find that you need to leave more behind that you had originally planned. Because of this, consider always planning for extra space and storage services. It is always better to have a little extra room that is not being utilized than to have a lack of space for all of your items.

Even if you think you have a good idea of the size of the furniture and boxes, take the time to measure everything that is going to be taken care of with the storage services. Measure the length and width of the couch or the length of the desk when unassembled. In both cases, accurate measurements will help you determine the amount of space that you are going to need.

Let One Company Handle the Details:

It is possible to choose a company that can handle both the moving aspect of the transition as well as the storage services. A customer can leave their space and their property to one company and let the professionals handle it all. This saves time when it comes to communication and figuring out what is going to be best for the move itself.

Hiring A Garage Floor Contractor Is Easy To Do

A garage floor contractor will work with you to determine what specific needs you have. This professional should be someone you can easily talk to and ask questions of, especially since this is a big investment in your home. No matter what type of material you select, hiring the right professional to do the work is critical. It will ultimately determine how successful you are in the project. Do avoid hiring the wrong team, but also know what your options really are.

What To Ask

Before you hire a garage floor contractor to do the job, it is up to you to consider every aspect of the project. Request a consultation with a professional. The provider can come to your home and inspect what you currently have in place. He or she can then offer plenty of advice on what material options will work best for your needs. There are many things to consider throughout the process, including the following:

- What type of material is ideal for the space based on the climate and outdoor conditions? You may want something that will withstand the freezing temperatures without cracking, for example.

- Will there be a slope and a center drain? This is critical if the flooring is likely to get wet, which in most garages does happen. You will want to determine the best method for extracting water from this space.

- What type of tasks do you perform in the space? You may want something that is not likely to stain and that is easy to maintain overall.

- What type of surface is best? Some contractors may offer cement as the ideal choice. Other options may include a cork or padded material ideal for those locations where you want something to cushion a fall. You may also want to consider a stone product.

- What is your budget? What are the guarantees for the materials you plan to use? What other factors does the contractor believe you should be considering?

Asking as many questions as you can is critical when it comes to selecting the right provider and product for your home. Although it may seem like this is not a big deal, it can be. The color, style, and function of the flooring make a difference in the way you can use that space for years to come. Talk to a garage floor contractor about the needs you have. Then, move forward with the project, narrowing every aspect of your choice down until you find the ideal flooring arrangement for your space. Think big here. You can have the higher end quality product and enjoy every moment of it, too.

Why Do You Need A Garage?

According to Worldometers, as of this year, over 60 million passenger cars are being produced around the world. Not included in the statistics are bicycle production, light commercial vehicles and heavy trucks, buses, coaches and minibuses. This data is based on the latest statistics on worldwide car production issued by the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers or OICA. Having said that, imagine if all this cars find its way to the streets. Imagine if one it finds its way to your home. The necessity of a garage becomes apparent.

A garage is an establishment or shop where motor vehicles are kept or repaired. The vehicles that are produced these days are designed not just for sophistication but also engineered to run thousands of miles. Even so, they are not created to last forever. As we all know, the basic materials used in cars are steel, plastic, aluminum, rubber, and glass. These materials, when exposed to the elements undergo changes. Steel, as we all know it, turns into rusts. Although with varying degrees, the other materials of your car also undergo different kinds of changes. More so, if they are left out in the open and exposed to different elements. This is just one of the many reasons why you can't just leave your car outside.

Another important reason why you ought to have a garage is for practicality. Trust is not something we just give to anyone, not even to our neighbors. As reported by CarBuzz, the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Uniform Crime Reports declared that a motor vehicle is stolen in the United States every 40 seconds. The data shows reports as of September 2011. It may have changed as of this day but the danger is still there. Why would you risk theft if you can leave your car safely in the garage? A lot of houses today have garages in them for this purpose alone.

Garages, just like houses, should have garage doors. There are different kinds of garage doors that you can choose from depending on your budget and style.

To some people, garages are not just only a place to park your car but an alternative storage area. Also, should you have some problems with your vehicle, be it a family car or as simple as a bicycle, no other area in the house is better to shield you from the sun while you are repairing your ride. A garage is definitely a must have to the modern man. You can never ignore the importance of having one.

Carton Boxes VS Alternatives for Storage

In this fast and furious world today, we are able to find many different kinds of storage products that can allow us to organize with ease. However, not every product is able to be cheap yet good. Many people are more inclined towards the use of metal or plastic containers for storage as they are more durable. However, metal and plastic containers are expensive and are their shapes are not flexible as their shapes are fixed. Instead, carton boxes are cheap, space saving, flexible and can be stored easily when not in use.

Using carton boxes is very cost efficient for companies as they are made from recycled materials. Not only can they help to save cost, they are also environmentally friendly. Carton boxes also do not have any sharp edges that will cut you accidentally when you are moving them. They are able to hold well under heavy weight and you are able to stack them on top of each other without any damages.

Carton boxes are extremely cheap and that is the main advantage. You may even get free boxes from supermarkets or household electric appliance shops! Although it may not be as durable as metal or plastic, they are able to hold reasonably well and can allow you to store practically anything from clothes to fragile items. They also come in different shapes and sizes so you can choose the box based on your own needs.

Carton boxes can be easily sealed up using tapes or staples and will not tear off when they are dropped accidentally. Since boxes have smooth surfaces, they can easily be glued up, assuring consumers of a secured seal.

Carton boxes can also be made according to your needs. They can be made in any color and any shape without any much additional cost. They can also be lined with foam or bubble wrap to provide an even higher protection level.

However, carton boxes are not weatherproof and do not last long. They can wear off rather easily and the box will simply break open. It is also not advisable to store anything electrical inside the boxes as water can seep through and cause damages. Once the box is moist, they will degrade at an alarming rate and will give way anytime without any warning.

Although there are benefits of using a carton box for storage, there are also disadvantages. Depending on the storage item and conditions, different sturdier packing may need to be used instead.

Choosing a Storage Facility

When it comes to our things many of us run out of room and need to find another outlet to store them. For most people, they choose the local storage facility in their community because of convenience. Before you choose that storage unit based on that single factor, you should know that there are many other factors to be considered when it comes to housing your personal belongings.

It can be overwhelming to look in the yellow pages or online to select a place to hold your things. After all, these are your items and you want to be certain that your belongings will be there when you want to remove them. You also do not want to pay more than these items are worth. For some of us, we store our extra simply until we get a chance to go through them. Whatever your reasons for needing a storage unit, you need to do a bit of research before selecting a storage facility. Here are some considerations to keep in mind:

Location

This is crucial because you need to be able to access your things when you want to. Most times a drive of five to ten minutes is an acceptable range of time to drive. If you live in a secluded area that is limited in storage facilities you may have to settle for a drive that is a bit further.

Security

When it comes to security there are several different ways in which storage facilities guarantee the protection of your belongings. Many companies provide individual codes to access the unit, while others issue keys that only work on one unit. Some even provide shaped locks that are almost impossible to cut. These units are usually well lit hoping to deter would-be criminals from entering.

Safety

Storage facilities should contain cameras that provide a sense of security for those who need to access their belongings after dark. They are usually equipped with bright lights that serve a dual purpose making it easy for you to find your unit and to again deter those who do not belong.

Accessibility

In terms of accessibility having a wide entrance and enough room to maneuver a large truck would be ideal. This would make it easy for you to unload your belongings to place in the unit as well as clean out your unit once it is no longer required.

Size

Storage facilities offer an array of sizes. The larger the size of the unit, the more expensive you can expect it to be. Sometimes the larger unit is more cost effective especially if you may be adding more items to storage rather than taking away.

When it comes to housing your belongings away from home just make sure that you have access day or night, that there is some type of security system in place and that you are not charged additional fees for starting during a month rather than on the first.

U.S. Self Storage Industry Continues to Expand

The self storage industry in the U.S. has grown tremendously over the decades. And it shows no signs of expanding moving forward.

This sector is one of the fastest growing in the real estate market. Based on data from the Self Storage Association, storage space doubled in a period of five years from one billion square feet to more than two billion square feet in 2005. Also, more than 8,600 facilities were put up across the U.S. during the peak of the industry from 2004-2005.

The U.S. has an estimated 50,100 facilities which is five times more than what the rest of the world has at only around 8,000, accounting for 86 percent of the total global self storage market. This only indicates that the country has a strong demand for self storage from consumers ranging from students and single people to the married couples and their families.

In 1996, only six percent of households used storage units. In 2007, reports showed nearly one in 10 households renting a self storage unit. This is an increase by 65 percent from the year 1996.

Self storage facilities earn more than other sectors these days. In 2011, their return on investment was higher than other health care, residential, retail, office, timber and lodging resorts at 35.22 percent.

Nearly 5,000 facilities are owned by four of the largest companies in the country. These are CubeSmart, Extra Space, Public Storage, Sovran/Uncle Bob's which recorded high earnings last year. Data in 2011 showed that 27,650 facilities were owned by small business entrepreneurs.

History has it that public storage started in ancient China. The modern self storage, however, were put up at a much later time in the 1960s and more were constructed in the 1990s. During the 90s, the demand grew stronger outpacing the supply leading to rush developments of these facilities. You may be surprised to know that for a period of five years from 2000 to 2005, more than 3,000 new facilities were built every year to keep up with the high demand for storage space.

Facilities in the U.S. are located on both industrial and commercial lots. The total self storage space occupied today is equivalent to three times the size of the entire Manhattan Island.

Unit sizes vary today with the 10 by 5 feet being the most popular. Other sizes available are the five by five feet which is the smallest, 10 by 10 feet, 10 by 20 feet, 15 by 20 feet and 20 by 20 feet. Most units have no windows and lockable by the tenant. Customers can choose between the standard and the climate controlled type which is ideal for storing delicate items. Security systems are in place including door alarms and surveillance cameras.

With lifestyle changes being faced by many people today, these self storage facilities prove to be very useful particularly to those who have accumulated a lot of personal items through the years. These rental units have also become more affordable owing to a stiff competition among providers.
